SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- No charges will be filed in an accident last week that killed Richard C. Gardiner, 84, of Canton, Conn., the South Kingstown police said.
Gardiner was riding his bicycle when he was hit by a car going south on Route 1 just before 5 p.m. Thursday.
The driver, who was not identified, stopped and remained on scene, the police said.
An avid cyclist, Gardiner had commuted daily from Canton to his teaching job in Hartford and raced with the Nutmeg Wheelmen cycling club, according to an obituary published in The Courant of Hartford.
Gardiner was also a member of the National Ski Patrol and set up the Connecticut Region Nordic Ski Patrol program, serving as the area's mountain travel and rescue instructor trainer as well as a Level II avalanche instructor, according to the obituary.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Vincent Funeral Home, 120 Albany Turnpike in Canton. A memorial service will be Sunday at 10 a.m. at Ski Sundown in New Hartford. Donations in his memory may be given to the Roaring Brook Nature Center, 70 Gracey Rd. Canton CT 06019.
