PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- As the day winded to a close on Rhode Island's first official day of same-sex marriage, a dozen couples applied for and received marriage licenses at Providence City Hall, according to the city's Office of Vital Statistics.

Six same sex couples had been preregistered and were among the first to walk out of the building with a license when city hall opened its doors at 8:30 a.m.

Six other couples had come in throughout the course of the day.

And, according to Serena Conley, who runs the Vital Statistics office, three couples had marriages at some point in the day and have already returned their licenses to the office.

That included Zachary Marcus and Greg McDowell, a Providence couple married by Mayor Angel Taveras in his office Thursday afternoon.
