PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Rhode Island Board of Education is scheduled to discuss a private retreat, which a judge says must be at least partially open to the public if members want to discuss a controversial new graduation requirement that students pass a standardized test.
In response to an ACLU lawsuit, a Superior Court judge last week ruled the board must open the part of the retreat having to do with the testing requirement or to drop it from the agenda altogether. Gov. Lincoln Chafee and board Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso later said they would recommend making the entire retreat public.
The board is scheduled to meet Wednesday afternoon. It will also discuss the governor's recommendation to appoint Clark Greene to temporarily oversee day-to-day operations at the Office of Higher Education.
