PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A local man and a couple from Cranston were wounded in a shooting in the city's West End late Tuesday night.
Someone opened fire on people outside 17 Hudson St. around 11:30 p.m., hitting Chan Chhoeur, 35, who lives there, and Cranston residents Larry Kim, 26, and Ritheary Chea, 30, said Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin.
None of the three were believed to have life-threatening injuries, Lapatin said Wednesday. Police hadn't yet determined whether the shooting was gang-related, he said.
The house at 17 Hudson St. had been a "gang house" for years, until the district's commander Lt. Luis San Lucas warned the landlord in 2010 that he'd involve the attorney general's office to crack down on the "common nuisance" house. Members of the Oriental Rascals have been arrested there before, including two teenage boys caught with guns in 2003, and the house has been shot up multiple times.
The serious problems quieted after the police crackdown nearly three years ago -- until recently.
With Tuesday's triple-shooting, the city has had 71 people shot so far this year, just one more than the number of people shot this time last year, said Capt. Michael E. Correia.
