PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- She had stuck by Darryl Henries as he served time at the Adult Correctional Institutions.
But in return for his new girlfriend's loyalty, the police say, Henries began beating her up soon after he was released from prison.
A call late Tuesday about a man breaking into a basement apartment led police officers to find the ex-convict terrorizing the 31-year-old woman, who was crying in the doorway at 362 Niagara St., said Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin. Henries, 43, was nearby, he said.
The woman was timid and quiet, Lapatin said, but eventually told investigators from the police special victims unit about what Henries had been doing to her since he was released a few weeks ago from the ACI.
The woman said she began dating Henries while he was imprisoned; his most recent charge was breaking and entering, although his record also includes arrests for domestic assault and drugs. He's also used the names Darryl Johnson, Darryl Mitchell, and Kevin Garnetto, according to court records.
Henries moved in with her when he was released -- and, she told police, that's when the beatings started, Lapatin said.
Over the last week, the woman told police, Henries assaulted her, threatened her, strangled her until she lost consciousness, and pulled a plastic bag over her head to suffocate her, Lapatin said. She told police that she bit through the bag so she could breathe, the major said.
"She was afraid," Lapatin said. "She was not free to leave the apartment."
Late Tuesday night, Henries left the apartment, and his girlfriend was apparently able to keep him out long enough for someone to call police about a man trying to break into the apartment, Lapatin said.
Henries was arraigned Wednesday at District Court on a charge of felony domestic assault.
