PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- David Darlington, chairman of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, said Wednesday that traffic was moving normally over the Sakonnet River Bridge. The Authority began assessing a controversial 10-cent toll beginning Monday.
Darlington said 40,655 vehicles were recorded Monday; 42,455 on Tuesday; and 28,233 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday. Darlington said a little more than half the vehicles used the E-ZPass transponders, which automatically deduct tolls from the users' accounts.
Darlington said the Authority is still determining how to bill vehicles that are not equipped with E-ZPass transponders.
Total transactions as of Wednesday afternoon were 111,343. If each vehicles pays a dime, it adds up to $11,134.
