PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- The mayors of Portsmouths in England, Virginia and New Hampshire will help the local Portsmouth celebrate its 375th birthday starting Thursday and continuing with a parade Saturday and a family fun day Sunday.

A free chamber music reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Greenvale Vineyards on Wapping Road, where guests can meet the visitors and taste Greenvale's 375th Special Edition Wine.

Saturday's parade starts at 10 a.m. at Patriot Lane and East Main Road, goes by Freeborn Street and Turnpike Avenue and finishes on Memorial Drive. A cannon volley will be fired at the Bristol Ferry Town Commons at 2 p.m., and a polo match begins at 5 p.m. at the International Polo Grounds on East Main Road. The match pits a U.S. team against a team from the United Kingdom.

Sunday's family fun day, from noon to 6 p.m. at Glen Park, brings carnival games, entertainment and demonstrations, plus a National Guard jump, cannons firing hourly, a bouncy house, pony rides, games, food vendors and a raffle.

Admission and parking are free, and picnicking is encouraged.
