PRUDENCE ISLAND, R.I. -- Six people were taken to area hospitals Saturday night after a boat they were in ran aground between Prudence and Patience Islands.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Second Class Barry Murphy said the 26-foot Pursuit boat was travelling through a section of Prudence Island called the "gut," which is "a treacherously shallow and rocky area to go through at night." Murphy also said the boat was travelling at a "pretty good rate of speed" on Narragansett Bay before it ran aground.
The Coast Guard received the call for help at 9:54 p.m., and it responded as well as Warwick, East Greenwich, Portsmouth, North Kingstown and possible another local emergency agency, Murphy said.
Six of the seven passengers were taken to area hospitals, three to Rhode Island Hospital and three to Kent Hospital. Murphy said their injuries varied from head lacerations to potential back injuries to chest pain. He didn't have the names of the boat passengers, or any other information.
