HOPKINTON, R.I. -- A 6-year-old horse and a 17-year-old horse died in a barn fire, believed to have been caused by a lightning strike, on Sunday morning at 24 Prospect Square.

According to Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire Chief Fred Stanley, firefighters knocked down the fire, which was reported about 4:50 a.m., in about a half-hour.

No people were injured. He said the barn was located behind the home.

Stanley said Sunday that "when we arrived, the building was pretty well involved."

Firefighters "made a quick attack" on the fire, Stanley said. He said "we had a large amount of hay" in the barn and that there was little the firefighters could do.

The Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire District sent four trucks, while the Ashaway and Carolina districts sent tanker trucks, in an area that Stanley said does not have hydrants.

Stanley said that, given there was a loss of life, the state fire marshal's office was brought in.

An earlier version of this report was posted at 10:11 a.m.
