PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Providence County through 4 p.m.
The Weather Service said that a severe thunderstorm was spotted on radar over Burrillville at 3:15 p.m.
The storm was capable of producing quarter-sized hailstones and damaging winds of up to 60 mph. The storm was moving northeast at 25 mph.
Woonsocket, Cumberland and North Smithfield were expected to be affected, as were several towns in nearby Massachusetts.
The Weather Service advised people to stay indoors and away from windows. Drivers should expect low visibility and flooded roads, the Weather Service said.
