At BIF9: Mary Flanagan says game design can be used for social transformation

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Milwaukee-born game designer Mary Flanagan says games can provided a new world and imagination for us.

"You can be whoever you want to be," she said while also saying it is a great vehicle for change, transformation.

She says she works to move people to be an effective force for change. Those playing her her game Pox, for example, try to stop the spread of disease. It promotes vaccinations. She then created a zombie version of Pox, and people playing that "valued vaccinations more."

Flanagan is a Dartmouth professor of digital humanities and she founded tiltfactor
