PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Acela trains will not be operating through Sunday in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and lengthy delays are expected on Amtrak's regional service due to a power failure on a rail line in the New York City suburbs.

The problem has caused delays in rail service between New York and Connecticut and massive traffic backups as train commuters turn to cars instead.

It's also having a ripple effect on train service to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Amtrak said Thursday that its high-speed Acela trains have been canceled between Boston and New York, and that Northeast regional trains are adding cars to accommodate extra passengers. But it said riders should expect lengthy delays.

The New York-based utility Consolidated Edison says the broken circuit could take two to three weeks to repair.
