PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senate Democratic leaders have called an open caucus at the State House on Thursday to elect a majority leader, and endorse "a candidate'' for Senate president.
There are no known challengers to the current Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio, or Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed, who both won their reelection bids Tuesday, as the already slim Republican ranks within the Democrat-dominated chamber got slimmer.
The actual election of the Senate president will take place at the start of the new session in January, with all Senators voting, not just the Democrats.
The caucus has been called for 5 p.m. in the Senate lounge.
