NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Newport is considering a type of scarlet letter for nuisance homes, party houses or residences causing neighborhood problems.
The Newport Daily News reported that the City Council asked City Solicitor Joseph J. Nicholson Jr. on Wednesday to review a Narragansett ordinance that places orange stickers to mark houses hosting noisy parties. Nicholson also will review a 2011 federal appeals court ruling that upheld the local law.
He was asked to recommend whether Newport should adopt the ordinance or a similar measure.
Councilwoman Kathryn E. Leonard said some people deserve what she called a big A on their foreheads and she'd support it if it brings peace.
