PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Immigrant-rights advocates are headed to the State House Monday to "demand'' that Governor Chafee provide "driver's licenses for undocumented drivers.''
"Citing the Governor's heavy courting of Latino voters during his campaign, and his election based on strong immigrant voter turnout, protesters criticize Chafee for failing to take action on the key concern of driver's licenses,'' said a press release issued on behalf of the "We Are All Arizona'' coalition planning the 4:30 demonstration.
"During the Carcieri Administration, undocumented drivers could legally obtain licenses using their tax identification number; many of these driver's licenses are now expiring, leading to increases in arrests and -- through the 'Secure Communities' collaboration program with immigration enforcement -- deportation of undocumented drivers,'' the press release says.
