PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The state's top transportation official has been elected head of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation officials, which represents highway and transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Michael P. Lewis became director of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation in March 2008. He previously worked for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, where he oversaw the Big Dig construction.
Lewis holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Vermont.
Meanwhile, Mike Hancock, secretary of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, was elected vice president.
The election was held Monday, at the group's board of directors annual meeting in Pittsburgh.
