PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Cranston man who the police say tried to destroy a giant menorah outside Providence City Hall will spend the holiday in jail.
Two firefighters caught Peter Zendran, 34, after seeing him knock down the display early Sunday morning, according to the police.
"The [expletive] city shouldn't be putting up religious displays in front of City Hall," Zendran screamed, according to a police report. "That is an infringement of my [expletive] rights."
Zendran pleaded not guilty Monday to malicious damage and resisting arrest.
District Court Judge William C. Clifton ordered him held without bail as a violator on convictions of resisting arrest and disturbing public assemblies. A hearing is set for Dec. 21.
The menorah was undamaged and will be lit Monday night, according to the mayor's spokesman.
