NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is introducing use of a new warning device in Long Island Sound.
Boaters who ignore instructions from the Coast Guard could find themselves on the other end of blasts from the signal device, which was designed for increased safety.
The LA51 device is fired from a shotgun to produce noise and a flash. Authorities say its effects are more pronounced than a splash in the water caused by M16 tracer rounds.
Capt. Joseph Vojvodich, commander of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound, says crews have received training on the device.
The Coast Guard is introducing the device more broadly after using it in migrant interdiction operations and counter-drug operations.
